The National - Exile Vilify

lyrics

Exile
It takes your mind again
Exile
It takes your mind again
You've got suckers' luck
Have you given up?

Does it feel like a trial?
Does it trouble your mind the way you trouble mine?

Exile
It takes your mind again
Exile
It takes your mind again
Oh, you meant so much
Have you given up?

Does it feel like a trial?
Does it trouble your mind the way you trouble mine?
Does it feel like a trial?
Now you're thinking too fast
You're like marbles on glass

Vilify
Don't even try
Vilify
Don't even try

You've got suckers' luck
Have you given up?
Does it feel like a trial?
Does it trouble your mind the way you trouble mine?
Does it feel like a trial?
Did you fall for the same empty answers again?

Vilify
Don't even try
Vilify
Don't even try
Vilify...

for almost their entire life Silver has found themself on the receiving end of being vilified, hated, and even hunted, whether for one or more of their multiple axes of marginalization or their continued efforts to protect other targeted people. even when not explicitly condemned they're quite used to being blamed and punished for things they could not help or even had no hand in. at this point they generally don't resist or even try to set people right, as their frequent experiences with these things have taught them to reluctantly accept resistance being seen as proof of guilt, and people convinced of your guilt will not generally want to change their minds.
even so, even for the painful betrayals of people they cared about and thought valued them, a part of them still grieves for the loss of what they thought they had, people they still can't quite let go of even when these people have made themselves clear as seeing Silver as little more than an obstacle to their own wants. the pain and resentment mingles with the lingering want of acceptance and connection from people who will not give it, into a truly dismal feeling that sometimes consumes Silver's thoughts entirely for a time.
